The Ali Forney Center’s mission is to protect LGBTQ youths from the harms of homelessness and empower them with the tools needed to live independently. Through a career placement program, LadyLand will hire Ali Forney youth in a fully paid internship capacity, providing work experience and connecting the center’s youth with the wider queer community in NYC.
Award-winning dancer Javier Ninja of the Legendary House of Ninja and the youth of Ali Forney will vogue live and spread the message of Gays against Guns, a direct action group of LGBTQ people and their allies working for safer gun laws. On a red carpet which will act as a runway, festival goers will be able to strut their stuff and “sashay away the NRA.”
Opening Ceremony was founded in September 2002 in New York by Carol Lim and Humberto Leon—with the idea of bringing their love of travel and fashion to a concept boutique. The company has grown to encompass retail outlets in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo and the Opening Ceremony ready-to-wear collections for men and women. Opening Ceremony has also become known for its myriad innovative collaborations, including projects with style icon Chloë Sevigny, filmmaker Spike Jonze...and the latest, a special collaboration with LadyLand Festival! Check it out here.
We are so honored to have been able to work with Xavier Schipani on all of LadyLand's visual art this year! Xavier is an incredible visual artist operating out of East Austin, Texas whose work explores urgent socio-political themes, with a specific focus on sex and gender and how society's restrictive approach to these subjects causes dysfunction and incites fear. Actively inviting his audience to be turned on by his images, that often feature either literal or abstract representations of non-binary figures, creates an experimental atmosphere, where the sexual and gender norms are momentarily relaxed and a space for self-exploration appears.
Mars Hobrecker will be providing a selection of free, custom-designed LadyLand / Army of Lovers tattoos at LadyLand, and we couldn't be more excited to see the results! Working at the intersection of fine art and the body, Mars Hobrecker is an multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans tattoos, performance, and visual art. Known primarily for his subversive tattoos that showcase a diverse range of bodies and that frequently draw inspiration from art and side show history, he is committed to nurturing a welcoming and non-judgmental tattoo environment in his private Brooklyn studio. He has been featured in publications such as Interview Magazine, i-D, The Fader, Racked, OUT, and Teen Vogue.
LadyLand is so excited to partner up with New York City-based creative director and visual artist Desi Santiago, who will be designing the festival's scenic elements! Desi has made a name for himself within art and fashion, collaborating with some of today’s most respected and visionary designers, brands, and artists such as Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Opening Ceremony, and Kenzo among others. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant, underground night-life of New York of which he was a key figure, the legendary club kid has staged performance and installation-based exhibitions at New York’s MoMA PS-1, Art Basel Miami, and has had his works exhibited internationally.
